    “TIP”= To Insure Promptness :)

“TIP” stands for “To insure promptness.”
    Unfortunately, it seldom does.

I’ve always heard it meant To Insure Promptness but thought it was strange that if you left a tip after being served, the only promptness you could receive, is change (or good service next time you got the same waitress, if you were memorable and generous). I recently found that tips were originally given before service. (This makes a lot more sense now)

As far as my tip answer…it would have to be hundreds or thousands, based upon my giving my all to anything that I am committed to but although that “service” loyalty and commitment are priceless, One can’t ask for more than the giver can afford to give. If it’s heartfelt and truly what can be afforded a kind word of praise for a job well done is it’s own reward…But if you don’t ask you’ll never get so, a classic Mercedes 350SL gull wing, silver with black leather interior, in mint condition including pink slip, keys, and a credit card for a years gas (at the prices we pay these days, that could be thousands, alone)

  6. pete50 Says:

Sadly my redoubtable Oxford English Dictionary shows that tip does not stand for anything. Ut originates from the 16th Century verb tip coming from the German word tippen.
Phrases such as to insure prompt service are actually rare examples of backronyms.
    Sadly boringly pedantic Pete.

  7. dombrae Says:

I understand the word tip to be -An item of advance or inside information GIVEN AS A GUIDE TO ACTION.

    Hi Dan,

Here is my winning entry. “TIP” means “To Insure Prompt Service” and interesting, was originally a sum of money set out before the service instead of afterwards, as it is now.

I liked this message and I’m going to concentrate on my many Winning positive contributions to the lives
of others and actively pursue ways to increase them. (And look forward to my new Mitsubishi Eclipse!)

  12. Betty Calingasan Says:

TIP should mean “Totally Important Person” as you are referring to a small gift of money for services rendered by a person who may have done a great service to you at the time.

  13. gvh Says:

What does a TIP mean to the waitress?:
    TIP = To Increase Prosperity

By applying the law of attracting prosperity, she is in control of the amount. Obviously it doesn’t turn out like in your examples with the $100 and the car every time, but by manifesting to provide great & personalized service she will influence the TIP.

    Regards
    Gerhard

    Hi Dan

    TIP stands for the following:

“to insure prompt service”, “to insure proper service”,

“to improve performance”, and “to insure promptness”.

Hope to be among the five people who will get the term
    right

    Thanks

  16. Dorothy Says:

Hope this is the right place to leave my answer to what TIP stands for:
    T – to
    I – insure
    P – promptness

  17. ckingkeys Says:

It actually is TIPS and stands for “To Insure Prompt Service.” The tip was given before the service was rendered.

I actually waited tables for years, and it was one of my favorite careers.

    Chris King

  18. JoeyD Says:

the word TIP is incorrectly claimed to be an acronym for “to insure proper service”
It originates from the 16th century verb tip which means to give unexpectedly and was derived from the german word tippen meaning to tap

  19. marypitre Says:

  26. panebreaker81 Says:

Dan it appears that most of your readers have taken the literal approach to the definition of TIP, (to insure promptness). For me it means Thoughtfulness Is Prosperity. Why would I look at it this way?

Having come from a childhood where prosperity was not a real option I have learned that being thoughtful to others provides a real sense of peace and prosperity. What better way can we provide a positive light on all of mankind, but by being thoughtful to each other. One thing that I always try to do is say hello, good morning or offer any other kind of greeting to a stranger that I see during my daily interactions. My kids used to always ask me, “do you know that person”, to which I would say know most of the time. I beleive that this confused them at times. I would explain that I was just trying to be thoughtful. You never know who may be at their wits end and just need someone to acknowledge them.

    Well!!, enough philosophising for now.

Thanks for the thought provoking question. Keep up the good work and God Bless.
